Hungarian Viszlas are one of the most handsome and loyal breeds around, which may be what is making them an increasingly popular choice across the world. These lovely dogs are full of great qualities that make them the perfect breed to own, but it helps to know a little about them before you decide to own one.
The story of the Viszla breed started over a thousand years ago on the Hungarian plains, when Magyar princes used them as hunting dogs. They remained the most popular pointer dog for Hungarian hunters for hundreds of years, as aristocrats sought to keep their breed as pure as possible. However, disaster almost struck in the early 19th century.
As the Hungarian aristocracy became more cosmopolitan and broadened its horizons, English and German pointers started to appear on Hungarian estates. This posed a huge threat to the Viszla bloodline.
However, a select group of breeders preserved the line, even during World War Two. It was a close run thing, but by the late 1940s, pure-breed Viszlas had become established in the USA as well as Hungary, and the future of the breed looked rosy again.
When you meet a well brought up Viszla, you will instantly feel grateful for those breeders, who saved it from extinction. Part of the appeal lies in their appearance. Viszlas have beautifully rich, russet coats, which varies naturally across their coat, creating a gorgeous color.
But we love the Viszla for more than their looks. They are also some of the best companions you could imagine. Often likened to “aristocratic clowns”, Viszlas are full of energy, but in a good way. They love people, are gentle with children and are extremely affectionate (sometimes too affectionate for those who prefer to keep their dogs at arm’s length).
Most of the time, Viszlas also require hardly any maintenance. They don’t shed much and tend to be very clean. Sure, they may require plenty of exercise, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The sight of your beloved Viszla bounding across a field is one that send the heart soaring. They love to leap, bound, swim and roll around, and it’s a joy to behold.
So, if you want a loyal friend who isn't hard work and charms everyone they meet, a Viszla could be ideal.
